The Indian government issued a statement on Wednesday that the Cabinet has approved to raise the minimum price paid by sugar mills for sugarcane purchase to Rs 305 per 100 kg in the next year starting from October 1, higher than the previous Rs 290.

In a letter to the government on Wednesday, the Indian Sugar Manufacturers Association (ISMA) called for an increase in the minimum selling price of sugar to compensate for the impact of the rise in sugar cane prices. The rise in the price of sugar cane will lead to an increase in the production costs of sugar mills.

ISMA said that the last time India raised the minimum selling price of sugar was in February 2019, when it was raised to 31000 rupees per ton. Since then, it has not been adjusted, even though the production cost of sugar factories has jumped to 36000-37000 rupees per ton.

ISMA said in the letter that at present, the sugar price is 32000-34000 rupees per ton, and the minimum selling price should be raised to 36000-37000 rupees per ton to ensure that the sugar factory is able to pay the sugarcane farmers.
