Brazil will export a record 30.8 million tons of sugar in 2020
Release Date:2021-01-14
During the 2020/21 extraction season, which officially ended in March, Brazilian refiners spent 46.2% of their cane harvest on sugar production, with final production expected to reach 41.8 million tonnes, according to Conab, the Brazilian state supply company. The high production has been boosted by favourable conditions in the global sugar market, but it has also hurt the domestic ethanol market.

Export figures for 2020 reinforce the problem. In 2020, Brazil´s annual sugar export reached 30.79 million tons, a record high since 2009 and a year-on-year increase of 72.1%.

Brazil´s total sugar export revenue last year rose $8.77 million, or 69.4 percent, from a year earlier. This was mainly driven by production growth, while average prices fell 1.6% from $289.51 to $284.91 / t.

Among them, raw sugar exports reached 26.83 million tons at an average price of $276.17 / ton, and white sugar exports reached 3.96 million tons at a sales price of $344.11 / ton.

In December last year, Brazilian sugar mills exported 2.98 million tons of sugar, including 2.61 million tons of raw sugar and 367,400 tons of refined sugar. The average price was $295.12 / ton for a total revenue of $879.84 million. The volume of exports was up 107.7 per cent, the average price was up 2.7 per cent and the revenue was up 113.2 per cent.
